2008-2009 Choral Season:

Peace and Glory
October 19, 2008, 3:00 pm
Bethany Lutheran Church

Our 39th season opens with a blend of the Chorale, soloists, and orchestra presenting two cantatas that speak to the universal desire for peace and good will among all people. Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams, first presented in 1937, weaves the words of Walt Whitman, John Bright, and the last movement of the Roman Catholic Mass into a thoughtful expression of the plea for peace and the realities of war, ending in an optimistic and hopeful tone. To complement this, we offer Francis Poulenc’s joyous Gloria, which sets the second portion of the Roman Mass in an introspective, yet buoyant presentation. The concert thoughtfully contrasts the mourning of war with the celebration of peace among all people.

Misa Tariro Marimba Mass, Mass of Hope

Bethany Lutheran Church

Come, take a tour of Africa with the Colorado Chorale and Boulder’s electrifying marimba ensemble Kutandara. Offering a variety of selections in our safari through Africa, we will close with Misa Tariro Marimba Mass by composer and Kutandara leader R. Seaton McIntosh. McIntosh, inspired by the spirit of Zimbabwean community worship ceremonies, expresses that spirit through the prayer sections of the ordinary Latin Mass and includes poems and proverbs sung in the native Shona Zimbabwean dialect. Safari with us!
